frequently asked questions

What defines a planet, and how is it different from objects like stars, moons, or asteroids?

A planet is a celestial body that orbits a star, is spherical in shape due to its own gravity, and has cleared its orbit of other debris. Unlike stars, planets do not produce their own light through nuclear fusion. Moons orbit planets, while asteroids are smaller rocky bodies that haven’t cleared their orbits.

Terrestrial planets, such as Earth and Mars, are rocky, have solid surfaces, and are relatively small. They are composed mainly of metals and silicates. Gas giants, like Jupiter and Saturn, are much larger and lack solid surfaces. They are composed primarily of hydrogen and helium, with thick atmospheres and powerful weather systems.

Earth is unique because it supports life. It has liquid water, a protective atmosphere, and a magnetic field that shields it from harmful solar radiation. Earth’s position in the habitable zone, also known as the “Goldilocks zone,” allows it to maintain a stable climate suitable for life.

Exoplanets are planets that orbit stars outside our solar system. Scientists discover them using methods like the transit method, where they observe a star’s light dimming as a planet passes in front of it, and the radial velocity method, which detects a star’s wobble caused by a planet’s gravitational pull.

Planets form from clouds of gas and dust around young stars, known as protoplanetary disks. The process begins with small particles colliding and sticking together, forming planetesimals. Over time, these grow into protoplanets and eventually full-fledged planets as they gather more material and clear their orbits.
